K8TMROC CO-LEADERS

Dara Shifrer
FACULTY FACILITATOR
A sociologist of education at Portland State University, and a STEM DEI researcher,Dara Shifrer is the Lead PI and Facilitator for K8TMROC. Disenchanted with mathematics after completing her Bachelor’s degree with a major in math, she subsequently taught middle school math at two middle schools at the opposite end of the socioeconomic spectrum. Her students and their parents, at both schools, were quick to tell her that math was their least favorite subject and that they’re ‘just not math people. She realized her college math courses, like many math courses, were not designed to make her feel that she belonged or was capable or to communicate math's value and importance for human beings and society.
